Mindful Living Assistance for Elders

more experiences, great memories

Picture
Arley loved birds. His apartment in assisted living did not have a very promising viewing window. His daughter put up feeders. It became known through the grape vine that he had humming birds visit daily. When I first came to know him he sat in his recliner looking into the kitchen. It wasn't a good angle to see what birds silently visited. Gradually he repositioned his chair so he had a view. Wow, one season a flock of cedar wax wing settled on the crab apples trees in the parking lot. WE saw them! We would go up to the 3 floor and position ourselves near a window, moving plants out of the way to watch a pond. This location came to be called the observation point. With binoculars in hand we saw a great blue heron fish. I saw my first king fisher dive into the pond catch a fish and eat it. Arley would sometimes impart bits of bird info such as how the fish would flip the fish around to eat it head first.

The one and only time Arley ventured out with me in his new car we had a national geographic moment. I got to drive!
We drove by a pond situated close to the road, very close to the road, no shoulder to speak of. We saw a pair of great blue herons so I pulled over an inch and stopped the car. I kept an eye out on the approaching traffic in the rear view mirror. The pond was on Arley's side, the passenger side. The 2 birds flew up into the air, swooping in circles giving us the show of the ages. It was breathtaking, I was half emerged in awe and also aware that we were parked on the road in a new car. I said Arley"I think I need to pull up, there is a car coming". he said "ahh let em go around!" We did not move and were filled with magic watching those birds circle and land.
